Delicate Arch
Dec 2000
We did this hike during our 2000 winter road trip of the Utah National Parks. This hike is in the Arches National Park near Moab. Moab is the typical outdoorsy town with all sorts of outdoor activities at close hand. We had done some pretty good hikes on the trip so far and this hike did not disappoint at all.
After taking some long distance shots of Delicate Arch from the Delicate Arch viewpoint, we drove to the parking area at Wolfe ranch. It is a 1.5 mile moderate hike to the arch and it should take the average hiker about 45 minutes each way. It was early afternoon when we started the hike. There wasn't much snow on the trail and it was pretty easy going. The trail isn’t really marked, so, when in doubt, follow the cairns. There is nothing much to see on the trail till almost the very end. Actually, there is nothing much to see till the very end J. Maybe we had just tuned out the red rock after having seen so much of it during the past week. I’m sure others will have a different opinion. The last part of the trail climbs up and curves around a bend and Delicate Arch stands in front of you. The trail ends abruptly and it is quite a (pleasant) surprise to see the arch and the vast expanse of the snow covered La Sal mountains framed so wonderfully behind it.

It is a beautiful spot…that day, there weren’t too many other hikers and all of us just sat quietly and took in the scenery. We waited till the sun almost set and then headed back to the trailhead.
If you are in the area, you should not miss this hike. For the short distance and the great view at the end, it is a really nice hike.
